Egypt’s Banking Sector Net Foreign Assets Reach 31.2 Billion Dollars, Highest Since January 2020
The net foreign assets of Egypt’s banking sector rose to 31.2 billion dollars in August 2026, their highest level since January 2020, the Central Bank of Egypt said on Thursday, according to the Middle East News Agency. The central bank’s own net foreign assets reached 18.8 billion dollars and those of banks 12.4 billion dollars.
The central bank holds the larger share
| Net foreign assets, August 2026 | USD billion |
|---|---|
| Central Bank of Egypt | 18.8 |
| Banks | 12.4 |
| Banking sector total | 31.2 |
Net foreign assets are foreign assets minus foreign liabilities.
The central bank accounted for about 60 percent of the sector’s net foreign assets and banks for about 40 percent, on our calculation. The bank said the figures confirm the resilience of the national economy.
Alongside reserves of 57.2 billion dollars
The August reading follows net international reserves of 57,214.5 million dollars at the end of August, which the central bank published on 7 September as a preliminary figure. The two indicators measure different parts of Egypt’s external position and are not directly comparable.
Why it matters: A banking sector net foreign asset position at a more than six-year high adds to Egypt’s external buffers, alongside net international reserves of 57,214.5 million dollars.
Outlook: The September figures will show whether the build-up in foreign currency positions continues through the end of the third quarter.
