Europe Market Wrap 2 October: All Nine Boards Rise After the US Payrolls Miss as Technology Jumps 2.64 Percent
Europe turned the week’s pattern over in one session. All nine boards we track closed higher on Friday, after two straight sessions in which all nine closed lower, and the turn came on the day the United States reported 29,000 September payrolls with unemployment at 4.2 percent, against the 84,000 consensus we carried, as published in our report of 2 October. The AEX led at 1.28 percent, the DAX added 1.17 percent to 25,231.20 on Deutsche Boerse’s published Xetra closing price and the Euro Stoxx 50 rose 1.02 percent, while the SMI’s 0.28 percent rise was the day’s shallowest. On the sector board technology jumped 2.64 percent and basic resources 2.16, the strongest rows of the day, and health care’s 0.81 percent drop was the deepest fall. Gold slipped below the 4,200 dollar line it sat above this morning, 0.74 percent lower at 4,171.40, and Brent traded near flat at 102.23 dollars after recovering a morning slide that had taken it below 100.
All nine boards turn higher after the payrolls miss
The September employment report, released at 12:30 GMT in the European afternoon, printed 29,000 nonfarm payrolls with the unemployment rate edging up to 4.2 percent from 4.1, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics release as read and published in our report of 2 October, about a third of the 84,000 consensus the network had carried into the day, and the same release revised July and August a combined 60,000 lower, as published there. The same morning euro area flash inflation ran to 3.8 percent, its highest since 2023, as published in our article of 2 October, and the boards closed higher all the same. Europe’s boards, lower through the morning on some bourses, closed higher across the whole set: the AEX rose 1.28 percent to 1,116.71 on Euronext’s final, the DAX 1.17 percent to 25,231.20 on the Schlusspreis, the Euro Stoxx 50 1.02 percent to 6,238.50 on the official closing value, the CAC 0.79 percent to 7,897.19, and the Stoxx Europe 600 0.75 percent to 631.35. The shallower half still rose as one: the FTSE MIB added 0.49 percent to 50,483.21 on Borsa Italiana’s board, the IBEX 0.42 percent to 19,085.30 at the exchange’s 17:35 settled print on its own page, the FTSE 100 0.32 percent to 10,461.95 on the exchange’s own board, and the SMI 0.28 percent to 13,660.92 on SIX’s page. Every row is measured against Thursday’s closes as published in our Europe Market Wrap of 1 October, and all nine chains are exact.
Technology and basic resources lead as gold slips under 4,200
Five of the eight Stoxx supersectors we track closed higher, led by technology and basic resources: technology rose 2.64 percent, basic resources 2.16 and telecoms 1.79 on the official 16:00 GMT closing values, while health care fell 0.81 percent, autos 0.21 and personal and household goods 0.06. In Frankfurt, Infineon closed 8.78 percent higher at 64.64 euros on Deutsche Boerse’s own Xetra page for the share, the chip maker carrying the technology move on that board. In the standing rows gold eased 0.74 percent to 4,171.40 dollars an ounce, below the 4,200 line it sat above at our Asia wrap this morning, and silver 0.83 percent to 60.665. Brent at 102.23 dollars was 0.08 percent below Thursday’s written settlement after a session that started with a slide below 100 on the stock release report carried this morning, as disclosed in our Asia Market Wrap of 2 October, and WTI sat 1.87 percent lower at 91.13. The dollar index eased 0.14 percent and sterling rose 0.27 percent.

United Arab Emirates, session of Friday 2 October
| Index | Close | Change |
|---|---|---|
| DFM General (Dubai) | 5,901.32 | -0.49% |
| FTSE ADX General (Abu Dhabi) | 9,973.01 | -0.25% |
Carried from our Asia Market Wrap of 2 October 2026, where the United Arab Emirates boards, which trade on Friday, were published with the rest of the Gulf on its weekend and no Middle East wrap today; figures are the exchanges’ own, as disclosed there.
Why it matters: The week ends with the board’s pattern inverted. After two sessions in which every European index we track closed lower, every one closed higher, and the turn came on the day the United States reported 29,000 September payrolls against the 84,000 consensus we carried. Technology led at 2.64 percent with basic resources at 2.16, while health care lagged, its 0.81 percent drop the deepest row on the sector table, and the rise came even with euro area inflation at 3.8 percent the same morning, as published in our article of 2 October. The commodity tape ran the other way around the same report: gold slipped below 4,200 as equities rallied, and Brent’s round trip from under 100 back to near flat left the barrel roughly where Thursday’s settlement put it.
Outlook: Tonight’s Commodities Wrap reads the session’s written settlements and tonight’s US wrap the first full Wall Street response to the payrolls report. On Monday the Hang Seng measures against 23,972.29 and India’s market reopens against Thursday’s 22,421.95, with the mainland boards back on 8 October, as disclosed in our Asia Market Wrap of 2 October.
