What the Increase Means
The 20 percent rise puts August at about 133 vessels, on our calculation, so September brought about 27 more vessel calls. That is about 5.3 vessels a day across the 30 days of September and at least about 340 containers per vessel on average, on our calculation from the published minimum. Container volumes grew more slowly than vessel numbers, by 10 percent against 20 percent.
Implied August levels
| Measure | August, implied | September |
|---|---|---|
| Vessels | about 133 | 160 |
| Standard containers | about 49,000 | more than 54,000 |
| Livestock | about 5,800 head | more than 8,000 head |
Our calculation from the September figures and the published monthly changes; rounded.
Why it matters: A 20 percent monthly rise in vessel calls and a 10 percent rise in containers point to busier traffic through Qatar’s ports at the end of the third quarter.
Outlook: The October figures will show whether the September step up in vessel calls and container volumes is sustained.
