Asia Market Wrap 4 November: Shenzhen Jumps 4.22% While Tokyo Falls 1.42% After Holiday
First published at 07:20 GMT; updated with the session’s closing edition at 10:27 GMT.
Mainland Chinese stocks led a split Asian session on Wednesday, with Shenzhen’s Component index closing 4.22% higher while Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 fell 1.42% on its return from a holiday.
Five of the ten markets in this wrap rose and five fell, with the gains led by mainland China and Hong Kong and the deepest losses in Tokyo. In The Edge’s reading, the even split, with China and Hong Kong rising while Tokyo and Taipei fell, left the region without a single direction on the day.
China and Hong Kong lead the gains
The Shanghai Composite closed 2.16% higher. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose for a fourth straight session, up 1.67%, while the Hang Seng Biotech Index jumped 8.08%, Hang Seng Indexes data show. India’s Nifty 50 posted a fifth straight gain, and Seoul’s Kospi recovered part of Tuesday’s sharp fall.
The People’s Bank of China said on Wednesday it had cut the rate on its lending facility for share buybacks and shareholding increases by 25 basis points to 1%.
Tokyo and Taipei extend their declines
Reuters reported that AI stocks in Asia led the early declines in equity markets after the US midterm results raised concern that regulation could slow the sector’s growth. The Nikkei 225 fell for a third straight session and the Topix lost 0.89%, in Tokyo’s first session after Tuesday’s holiday. Taipei’s Taiex dropped 0.83% for a fifth straight decline, and Singapore’s Straits Times index edged lower for a fifth straight session. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 also fell.
