Bahrain Sells 200 Million Dinars of Two Year Bonds at 7 Percent as Demand Runs Nearly Three Times the Offer
The Central Bank of Bahrain has issued 200 million dinars, about 533 million dollars, of two year government development bonds carrying a fixed annual return of 7.00 percent, and the sale drew subscriptions of 568.4 million dinars, an oversubscription of 284 percent. The bond, Issue 47, was subscribed on 15 July, is dated 19 July 2026 and matures on 19 July 2028, with the return paid every six months on 19 January and 19 July.
The Central Bank issues these bonds on behalf of the Government of Bahrain, and the paper is due to be listed on Bahrain Bourse for secondary trading from early August. Demand of 568.4 million dinars against the 200 million dinars on offer works out to a cover ratio of about 2.8 times, our calculation, a sign of firm investor appetite for Bahraini government paper.
The 7.00 percent fixed return on two year money is the number to watch. It marks the cost at which the government is funding itself in dinars over a short tenor, and the strong cover suggests investors were comfortable with that level, our reading, even as regional risk premia have been elevated. For a heavily oil-dependent budget, locking in short-term dinar funding at a defined rate with strong demand is a supportive signal.
Why it matters: The issue is a live read on Bahrain’s funding costs and on investor confidence in Gulf sovereign debt at a time of regional tension. Strong oversubscription at a fixed 7.00 percent points to solid demand for Gulf paper and steady access to local-currency funding, which supports the government’s financing plans.
Outlook: The listing on Bahrain Bourse in early August will show where the bond trades in the secondary market, and the terms of the next development bond issue will indicate whether funding costs are rising or easing.
