Euro Area Producer Prices Rise 1.6 Percent in July, Led by Energy
Euro area industrial producer prices rose 1.6 percent month on month in July 2026 and 5.8 percent from a year earlier, Eurostat said, while prices excluding energy were flat on the month and up 3.1 percent annually, as energy alone rose 5.6 percent month on month.
Energy Drove the Month, a Reversal From June
With total industry excluding energy flat for the month in both the monthly and its component readings, energy’s 5.6 percent monthly jump accounts for effectively the entirety of the headline monthly move. The move also marks a sharp reversal from June, when euro area producer prices fell 0.3 percent on the month, a swing of 1.9 percentage points between the two months, with energy itself swinging from a 1.5 percent monthly decline in June to July’s 5.6 percent monthly rise, a reversal of 7.1 percentage points in the energy component alone, on our calculation. The annual rate accelerated to 5.8 percent from June’s 4.6 percent, a pickup of 1.2 percentage points in a single month. Annually, energy prices in the euro area rose 12.9 percent from a year earlier, more than 4 times the 3.1 percent annual rate for total industry excluding energy, on our calculation, underscoring how much of the year on year acceleration also traces back to the same volatile category.
A Wide Spread Across Member States
Ireland recorded the largest monthly increase among member states at 4.3 percent, while Estonia recorded the largest decrease at 3.3 percent, a spread of 7.6 percentage points between the two extremes within the same currency area and the same month. Annually, the dispersion was even wider: Ireland’s prices rose 14.8 percent from a year earlier, the fastest in the euro area, while Luxembourg was the only member state posting an annual decline, at 7.3 percent, a spread of 22.1 percentage points between the two, on our calculation.
| Measure | Euro Area | EU |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly change | 1.6% | 1.4% |
| Annual change | 5.8% | 5.6% |
| Energy, monthly | 5.6% | 4.7% |
| Ex energy, monthly | 0.0% | 0.1% |
Figures as published by Eurostat for July 2026, first estimate. The euro area figure exceeded the wider EU figure by 0.2 percentage points on both the monthly and annual measures, on our calculation.
Why it matters: For the euro area, a headline producer price move driven almost entirely by energy, against a flat ex energy reading, points to upstream price pressure concentrated in one volatile input rather than broadening across industry. The exceptionally wide dispersion between member states also shows that industrial cost pressures remain highly uneven across the currency union.
Outlook: The next release, covering August 2026 producer prices, is due October 5, 2026.
