Europe Market Wrap 21 September: Every Index Rises as Brent Breaks Below 100
Every index on our Europe board rose on Monday, the mirror of Friday’s board on which every index fell: the FTSE MIB led at 1.60 percent higher, the Euro Stoxx 50 added 1.31 percent and the AEX’s 0.66 percent rise was the day’s smallest move. The rally arrived as crude fell out from under the board: Brent traded at 99.86 dollars a barrel at our 16:02 GMT capture, down 3.86 percent from Friday’s settlement and under the 100 dollar line, with WTI 4.72 percent lower at 95.57 dollars.
A board with no red on it
The advance ran end to end. The FTSE MIB rose 1.60 percent to 52,371.54 on Borsa Italiana’s own board, the Euro Stoxx 50 added 1.31 percent to 6,318.05 on the administrator’s 17:30 CET print and the Swiss SMI 1.23 percent to 13,956.58 on the operator’s own page. The IBEX 35 gained 1.08 percent to 19,724.40 on the exchange’s 17:35 board, the DAX 1.07 percent to 25,575.01 at its official Xetra closing price, and the Stoxx Europe 600 1.04 percent to 642.07 on the same 17:30 CET print basis as the Euro Stoxx 50. The CAC 40 rose 0.92 percent to 8,138.94 and the AEX 0.66 percent to 1,102.35, both on Euronext’s 18:05 CET prints, while the FTSE 100 added 0.75 percent to 10,739.01 on the London Stock Exchange’s own figures. The spread from Milan to Amsterdam was 0.94 percentage points, on our calculation, and every change reconciles against our published Friday closes, as corrected today to the administrator’s finals for the 2 STOXX benchmarks.
Banks lead the sectors and oil is the only fall
Banks led the 8 supersectors we track at 1.78 percent higher, with technology up 1.70 percent and telecoms 1.23 percent, while oil and gas was the only sector to fall, 0.78 percent lower, the board’s cleanest line, on our reading: the sector most exposed to the barrel fell with it. Brent stood 3.86 percent below Friday’s settlement at our capture even after Iran backed Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia on Saturday, with JPMorgan analysts putting Middle East oil flows at an average of 17.1 million barrels a day over the past 10 days in a note the network cited, per its oil report. Gold eased 0.88 percent from Friday’s settlement to 4,385.90 dollars an ounce and the euro slipped 0.15 percent to 1.1466 against a dollar index 0.19 percent firmer.

Carried whole from our Middle East Market Wrap of 21 September 2026, closes of Monday 21 September on the basis published there, stacked gainers then losers.
Why it matters: the day’s 3 boards tell one story in sequence, on our reading: Asia rose into cheaper crude, the Gulf’s board paid for the same barrel, and Europe collected it, with every index higher and the oil and gas sector the only fall. A 3.86 percent Brent slide to under 100 dollars cuts the import bill the continent’s boards discount, and the banks’ 1.78 percent lead on the sector board sits with last week’s higher policy rates, on our reading. Across everything we published today, the day’s best is South Korea’s Kospi at 1.65 percent higher and the worst Abu Dhabi’s FTSE ADX General at 1.61 percent lower, on our count.
Outlook: our commodities wrap follows with the settlements that decide whether Brent finishes under 100 dollars, and the US wrap after the New York close with Wall Street trading the same oil slide. For this board the test is whether Monday’s full green holds when the STOXX finals post.
