Google Launches Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber, a Cybersecurity AI Model, as the AI Race Intensifies in July 2026
Google has launched a new artificial-intelligence model focused on cybersecurity, called Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber, describing it as a lightweight system built to find, validate and patch software vulnerabilities quickly and efficiently. The model, announced by Google DeepMind on 21 July 2026, is being made available to governments and trusted partners through a limited-access pilot via a tool it calls CodeMender, and it expands Google’s Gemini line-up alongside cheaper general-purpose models.
Google set out a series of benchmark claims for the model. It said Flash Cyber performed competitively against significantly larger systems on an industry cyber-capability test, showed gains over earlier Flash models on Google’s own evaluations, and delivered an uplift when scanning code changes in the pipeline behind its Chrome browser. Google also said the model had identified 55 confirmed issues in the V8 JavaScript engine that powers Chrome, compared with 47 for an earlier Flash model and, on Google’s figures, 36 for a rival model from Anthropic.
The launch lands in an intensely competitive period for artificial intelligence, in which the largest developers are racing to demonstrate not only general capability but specialised strengths such as cybersecurity. Coverage of the announcement placed it in the context of competition with Anthropic, whose Mythos model has drawn significant attention in the field, while Google positioned the wider Gemini update around offering more capable models at lower cost.
