Market Wrap MENA-Asia 30 June: Egypt Rebounds Above 50,000 as Gulf and Asia End Mixed
Egyptian stocks led a mixed regional session on Tuesday, with the EGX 30 rebounding back above the 50,000 level, while Gulf markets and Asia closed in both directions, a day after Wall Street rallied and European equities held broadly flat.
Egypt and Gulf (Tuesday 30 June close)
Egypt was the standout. The EGX 30 jumped 1.33 percent to 50,487.96, recovering the 50,000 level it had lost the previous session as buyers returned after recent profit-taking. In the Gulf, the picture was mixed. Oman’s MSX 30 rose 0.55 percent to 7,507.94, Bahrain’s All Share index added 0.12 percent to 2,042.56 and Saudi Arabia’s Tadawul All Share Index steadied with a 0.07 percent gain to 10,799.92, recovering after the prior day’s decline.
The rest of the Gulf eased. Qatar’s QE Index slipped 0.10 percent to 10,241.75, Abu Dhabi’s FTSE ADX General Index fell 0.36 percent to 9,804.16, Kuwait’s Premier Market index declined 0.51 percent to 9,082.68 and Dubai’s DFM General Index was the regional laggard, down 0.63 percent to 5,955.58. The spread between Egypt’s gain and Dubai’s decline reached about 2 percentage points, underlining that local flows and positioning drove the session.
Asia (Tuesday 30 June close)
Asia was mixed. Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.86 percent to 70,062.32 and China’s Shanghai Composite gained 0.50 percent to 4,094.40, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 0.63 percent to 22,881.02, giving back part of the previous session’s rebound. The split reflected stock-specific and local positioning rather than a single regional driver.
Currencies
The US dollar traded at about 49.08 Egyptian pounds, with the pound firming 0.14 percent, and held steady against the Kuwaiti dinar at about 0.3079, reflecting the dinar’s basket peg. The dollar firmed broadly: it rose to about 162.3 yen, up 0.24 percent, while the euro eased to about 1.141 dollars, down 0.12 percent, and sterling slipped to about 1.323 dollars, down 0.20 percent.
United States and Europe (Monday 29 June close, for reference)
US and European figures here reflect Monday’s close, as Tuesday’s sessions were still open at the time of the regional close. On Monday, Wall Street rallied: the Nasdaq Composite jumped 2.07 percent to 25,820.14, the S&P 500 rose 1.18 percent to 7,440.43 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.59 percent to 52,182.74. European equities were broadly flat, with the Euro Stoxx 50 up 0.16 percent to 6,231.63, Germany’s DAX down 0.18 percent to 24,626.89 and the UK’s FTSE 100 down 0.23 percent to 10,484.22. Tuesday’s US and European closes will be covered in the evening wrap.
Why it matters
The session shows how local flows continue to drive regional markets. Egypt’s rebound above 50,000 signals renewed buying after profit-taking and follows the staff-level agreement with the IMF that supports the external financing outlook, while the mixed Gulf close reflects positioning rather than a single macro driver. Gulf markets remain sensitive to oil, domestic liquidity and dividends, with the prior day’s firm Wall Street lead not translating uniformly into regional gains.
Outlook
The near-term cues are whether Egypt can hold above 50,000, the direction of oil and regional diplomacy, and Tuesday’s US and European closes, which will set the tone for the next regional session. A calmer global backdrop and steady oil would support a more constructive regional tone, while any renewed escalation would keep investors selective.
