Asia Market Wrap 6 November: Kospi Sinks 6.02% as India’s Nifty 50 Bucks the Selloff
First published at 07:19 GMT; updated with the session’s closing edition at 11:24 GMT.
Seoul’s Kospi fell 6.02% and Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 lost 5.96% on Friday as a technology selloff swept Asia; of the ten indices, only India’s Nifty 50 rose.
Reuters reported on Friday that a steep rout in technology stocks rippled through markets on fears that the Democrats’ victory in the US midterm elections would increase regulatory scrutiny of artificial intelligence and slow the data centre build-out. In The Edge’s reading, the damage followed exposure to the AI hardware trade: Seoul, Tokyo and Taipei, whose benchmarks lean on chipmakers, fell hardest, while Sydney, Shanghai and Hong Kong each lost less than 1.3%.
Seoul, Tokyo and Taipei take the heaviest losses
Seoul’s Kospi led the declines, and Reuters reported that the selloff in AI stocks prompted policy measures in South Korea to ease market volatility. The Nikkei 225 fell for a fifth straight session as the broader Topix lost 5.90%. Taipei’s Taiex fell for a seventh straight session. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng ended a run of five gains, and Singapore and mainland China also closed lower; the table carries the full closes.
India gains while Dubai and Abu Dhabi slip
India’s Nifty 50 rose 2.01% for a seventh straight session and closed at the day’s high. In the UAE, whose markets are the only ones in the Gulf to trade on Fridays, Dubai’s DFM General slipped 0.28%, ending a run of four gains, and the FTSE ADX General in Abu Dhabi fell 1.34%.
